Event Details

Mike Wilson is a journalist who set up AllMediaScotland with one ambition: to be the go-to place for information, news and insight on the Scottish journalism scene. It's an idea many have attempted (and failed at) across the media landscape. The key is good writing for the web. Mike will share what it takes and get you writing great copy for the web and other medias in a three hour afternoon workshop in Newcastle on Wed 28 July. Find out what makes news, what engages audiences and what buttons to press – and make sure you can get your stories the attention they deserve!

The session will concentrate primarily on online writing, but most of what Mike has to say will be applicable across all media writing and media releases. He will be covering practical subjects such as:

  • constructing a compelling opening para
  • the architecture of media release (immediate or embargoed?)
  • How to do the ‘Who, What, Why, When’ without alienating your readers

Delegates are required to prepare and bring on paper story ideas you want to work up, or to bring stories you’ve already sent out and are prepared to share with the group. It doesn’t matter whether these pieces achieved their aims or not – at least as much can be learned from examples that missed their mark as those which hit it – and all criticism will be constructive!

When: Wednesday 28 July, 2pm – 5pm.

Where: Studio 25-26, The Kiln, Hoults Yard, Walker Road, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, NE6 1AB (click here for travel info)
